How Did Columbus Become the State Capital?

It started in 1803 when Ohio’s first state capital was Chillicothe (believe it or not!). In 1810 the capital city of the Buckeye State became Zanesville. Finally, in 1816 Columbus officially became the capital of our fair state. Not Cincinnati, not Cleveland, but Columbus…which was founded on Valentine’s Day 1812.

Today, our city is a teaming metropolis of nearly 900,000 residents. It is the most populous city in the State of Ohio and the 14th most populous in the nation. Except for Phoenix and Austin, it is the most populous of all the state capital cities in the US. We are rightfully proud to be residents of Columbus Ohio!

Here at Staats Plumbing we take our responsibility very seriously. We serve the plumbing and backflow testing needs of this large metropolitan area. When you need emergency or routine plumbing maintenance in the year to come, we hope you will think of Brent and his team at Staats Plumbing. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Staats family to yours.

It Will Be Freezing out There Very Soon.

Sure enough, as Thanksgiving approaches freezing weather is not far behind in the Columbus, OH. area. It may be comforting to know that most of the pipes in your home are protected from the cold. They are insulated along with the house and they get heat from the thermostat. The simple truth is when a pipe freezes, it can burst!

The easiest way to prevent that is to drain the lines prior to the first hard freeze. The next best thing you can do for your Columbus area home is to have a frost-free hose bib installed. Now, make sure to install insulation for each and every faucet at risk before winter sets in. Are you able to do all of this yourself?

Staats Plumbing will winterize and protect your faucets from freezing. All you have to do is give them a call and set up an appointment to have it done. Brent and his crew are experts at outdoor pipe freezing prevention. They are easy to find on the web at staatsplumbing.com. Then call (740) 625-5284. Don’t hesitate before November turns into December.

It Seems as if it Rains Half the Time Around Here.

Well, you are just about right. In the month of November is rains on average about 12 of every 30 days. So, now what? Since our capital city gets more average rain per year than other major metropolitan areas in the country…do you know what condition your sump pump is in? When was the last time it was checked?

Here are some of the steps for testing your sump pump –

1.  Inspect the pump and the outlet pipe.

2.  Make sure all the electrical components are properly engaged.

3.  Pour a bucket of water around it and see if it kicks on.

4.  Clean the pump thoroughly.

Maybe you can perform all these steps yourself. One thing is probably definite…sump pump repair or replacement in Columbus Ohio should be done by the experts at Staats Plumbing. Call Brent and he or one of his crew will come to your home to inspect, and repair, or replace your existing sump pump if necessary. Visit staatsplumbing.com and call (740) 625-5284.

What Does it Mean to be a Backflow Tester?

In the state of Ohio, it means you have earned the right to test for backflow in the homes and businesses of the state. Just so you know, the backflow tester certification is a twenty-four hour class and the backflow tester re-certification is an eight-hour class as required by the Ohio Industrial Compliance Division.

Here is how it worked for someone like me…Brent Staats. Prior to registering for an initial “Backflow Tester” certification class, I had to first submit a backflow tester application to the Ohio Department of Commerce. The State then reviewed my qualifications and sent me an approval notification. I’ll skip the long hours of training that went into that!

I take this designation and responsibility that comes with it very seriously. Since backflow tests are supposed to be done once a year, I hope you have not neglected your responsibility due to the strange year we have had. Contact me at (740) 625-5284 and visit my website at staatsplumbing.com for Columbus Ohio area backflow testing.

Causes of Clogged Drain.

Sewer and water drainage systems in a house are configured a bit like a tree and its branches. There is a main line that’s usually the largest in diameter, and sublines that run off it that are typically a bit smaller in size. While the toilet is probably the most common place where clogs originate, they can start, build up, and disrupt function in and from any location in the system.

The most common causes of a clogged drain in your Columbus area home are -

1.  Tree roots causing blockage of sewer lines.

2.  Flushable wipes can be a definite hinderance to the system.

3.  Feminine hygiene products and baby diapers

4.  Oil and grease are huge enemies of drains.

5.  Hair can accumulate over time.

A clogged drain is a no brain(er) for the drain unclogging experts at Staats Plumbing. Brent and his team will have your drains flowing smoothly again in no time. If you live in the Columbus Ohio area, please visit staatsplumbing.com on the internet. For service just call anytime be it an emergency or not at (740) 625-5284.

When is a Backflow Preventor Required?

Backflow prevention assemblies are designed to prevent contaminated water from mixing into clean municipal water supplies, which are commonly used as drinking water. Contaminants like sediments, bacteria, and fertilizer are a major public health hazard, so in Columbus, there are regulations in place that require certain structures to have backflow preventers installed.

You should be familiar with these two words…backpressure and siphonage. Backpressure a form of water backflow that results from an imbalance in water pressures. Your home or building’s plumbing system contains water at greater pressures than the municipal water mains. Back siphonage results from negative pressure, creating a partial vacuum effect.

Here at Staats Plumbing we “go with the flow!” We know the ins and outs of what back pressure and back siphonage mean to your Columbus area home or business. I hope you will call us when you suspect that you need a backflow preventor. Look us up on the web at staatsplumbing.com then call us at (740) 625-5284 and we will schedule a visit to your home or office.

GIGO

In the world of computers it means Garbage In Garbage Out. In our kitchen one of our most important appliances is the garbage disposal. How long should your Columbus Ohio home’s garbage disposal last? That is inexact because we don’t know how much foot traffic is going through your kitchen, but as a general rule of thumb it is up to 15 years.

Here are some signs that your garbage disposal is about to “give up the ghost” –

  1. New and obnoxious noises are emanating from it.
  2. A foul odor that never seems to subside.
  3. It simply will not turn on.
  4. There is a noticeable water leak.
  5. You seem to be constantly pressing the reset button.

It is certainly ready for a visit from us. We are Staats Plumbing serving the Columbus, Ohio area’s plumbing needs for many years. And, just in case a repair is out of the question we carry In-Sink-Erator garbage disposal units on our service truck. Whether it is repair or replacement we have you covered.
